This review is for <tomtoc Vintage Travel Backpack Business Durable Laptops Backpack w/Charge Port, Waterproof College School Computer Book Bag for Women & Men Fits up to 15.6” Laptop Notebook & 10.5” iPad> from tomtocDirect [Item Model: A90; ASIN: B07MFNPN3G]
I'm using this for a MacBook Pro 15" with the <i-Blason [Heavy Duty] Slim Rubberized [Dual Layer] Cover with TPU Bumper> Case [ASIN: B01MZWT6VK]. That case makes the overall dimensions of the laptop considerably larger, especially in thickness so I was bit worried my Mac wouldn't fit in this bag. It turned out to be a perfect fit. The Internal laptop pocket with the hard BottomArmor protection at the bottom of the slot holds the Mac with case perfectly. When inserted all the way into the pocket, my Mac is not only given more protection at the bottom end but it is also kept centered in the bag. This provides a buffer zone all around the Mac for significantly more protection than your average backpack. To me this is the best bag I've seen for protection during hectic travel actives such as going through airport security, stowing overhead or under seat, rough handling by porters or cabbies, etc.
The bag would almost be too big if not for the protective buffer zone it provides mentioned above. For my typical international travel, I like to have things as compact and lightweight as possible. The size of this bag initially seemed too big for that goal but I'm going to try to utilize the extra space in the bag to offload lighter items from my carry-on suitcase. The extra top space in the bag should be an ideal place for my jacket. Haven't been on a trip with this bag yet so I'll need to update this review after I’ve travelled with it.
+ Very nice look and feel.
+ Seems very durable with heavy duty reinforced attachment points for shoulder straps and carry handle.
+ Tough and durable materials including the waterproof outer skin.
+ BottomArmor pocket provides extra level protection at bottom of laptop pocket.
+ Extra protection in the back for excellent protection of laptop which is against the back inside the interior pocket.
+ Laptop pocket provides buffer zone of protection in 5 other directions (top, bottom, both sides, and front).
+ Extra inner pocket for tablet or iPad does the same.
+ Even if you forget to close the zippers temporarily, there’s much less chance of laptop, tablet, or other items falling out like there is with external pockets in other bags.
+ All the external pockets keep smaller items well protected and easily accessible.
+ 2 side pockets should work well for drink bottle, umbrella, or similar items.
- The magnetic catch for center strap on the top flip-over lid is too weak. This makes the tough looking strap only appear secure. The strap disconnects with only a slight tug. This is the weakest element of this bag. The very weak magnet catch makes the top lid only a throw over cover. I wish they had made the catch mechanically latching with a much more solid hold and release mechanism.
- None of the external pocket zippers have a way to lock them. I would have preferred that each pocket zipper included a place to attach a lock to securely keep each pocket zipper in the closed position. If the two pockets that are next to each other had the zippers closing to the middle instead of to the outside, a single lock point could have been added to service both pockets.
-Only the main compartment can be secured by using a small travel lock to secure the two zipper pulls together. The two zips do not include the interlacing lock holes that are made to very effectively lock two zips on the same zipper tightly closed. Locking the 2 pull tabs together (which is all you can do on this bag) still allows the zips to be opened about 2 inches. With the leather pulls added to the pull tabs there isn't actually enough room to even fit the lock shackle.
All the CONS are security issues for me. If it were not for these short comings, I would have given this bag 5 stars and I would be singing its praises. The lack of security features is unfortunately a big short coming for me and I'm going to have to find a way to fix this. Leaving the bag at a hotel baggage check isn’t going to be possible as it is now. Also the bags outer compartments are too easily accessed by pick pockets when moving in crowds.n
